WHAT IS WABI-SABI?

Simply stated, Wabi-Sabi means, "Finding beauty in imperfection." The old barn with it's weathered, silvery patina, children coloring outside the lines, old people, old stained glass windows, new stained glass windows....they all have imperfections, visible and invisible, but they all have beauty if you look close enough.

I myself had never heard the word until about 10 years ago. I was watching a television show where one of the characters was growing roses. He was preparing to enter a rose into a competition, but one of the petals was slightly wilted and the boy’s father intervened. His father told him that he couldn’t possibly enter THAT particular rose because it wasn’t perfect. And it wasn’t. But the boy simply replied to his father telling him, “that’s Wabi-Sabi.”

Having never heard that term before, I took it upon myself to do some research and couldn’t agree more with the beauty in that rose. From that moment on, the seed was planted in my mind. So when it came time to choose a name for our business, there was only one option…Wabi-Sabi Workshops.
